A new car for £1,290
The Daily Express - January 11, 2008
THE world's cheapest car was unveiled yesterday and it costs less than many family holidays.
The Nano is a four-seater runabout with a two-cylinder petrol engine and a top speed of 65mph.
It was launched in India by Tata, the company which is bidding to buy Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford.
At £1,290 for the basic model, the 625cc Nano is less than a third of the price of the cheapest car currently available in the UK, the Perodua Kelisa, which costs £4,800.
But British drivers may have to wait a few years to get their hands on one. The Nano is aimed at the Indian market where most people can afford only glorified motorcycles and Tata said it has no plans to export it as yet.
Company chairman Ratan Tata said: "Many said this dream couldn't be achieved. Some scoffed at what we would produce.
"Let me assure you that the car we have designed will meet all the safety requirements of a modern car, and a lower pollution level than even a two-wheeler in India today."
An AA spokeswoman said: "It has passed all the European tests so in principle it could be driven in the UK but it is likely to be at least three or four years before it is sold here."
