Strange Span: 1905

Circa 1905. "Aerial bridge. Duluth, Minnesota." Suspended Car Transfer over the Duluth Ship Canal. The gondola could carry 60 tons of cargo across the 300-foot channel with minimal obstruction of the shipping lane. After modification for service as a vertical lift, the span became known as the Aerial Lift Bridge. 8x10 dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company.

The new $100-million Montreal Aerial Gondola (MAG) project connecting Old Montreal with Ile Ste-Hélène and Ile Notre-Dame has been dubbed "Montreal's next showcase to the world" and, best of all, says Jeff Jorgenson, VP of Montreal's Skylink Aerial Gondolas, the company wanting to build the project, "This is 100 per cent private money."

Skylink also claims the MAG will generate $120-million in new tourist spending annually, more than the F1 Grand Prix and the Jazz Festival combined.

Except the federally run Old Port of Montreal Corporation - whose Quays of the Old Port would house the Montreal Island terminal - flat-out refuses to let Skylink build on their property.

"Their most recent objection is the project won't blend in with the historic nature of the Old Port," Jorgenson told Hour this week, noting his project has the support of Tourism Montreal, the Montreal Chamber of Commerce and Parc Jean-Drapeau (City of Montreal).

But Old Port officials are having none of that. "We question their implementation on our territory which would compromise some activities and development," says Old Port of Montreal Corporation marketing director Michel Rafi. "We don't want to name specifics and cause [unnecessary] concerns to those people who run those activities."

Jorgensen retorts, "There's little there right now. We can make the Old Port a point of renaissance for Old Montreal. It needs something new and exciting."

Jorgensen says the Old Port terminal would be built "on the grass just to the
east of Quay Jacques-Cartier." All gondola cabins would be wheelchair accessible, many fitted to carry bicycles and skis, and its alpine ski technology would allow it to run year-round.

"I've been to every city in this country and Montreal is by far the most beautiful seen from the air," Jorgensen says, noting a decision must be made by January 2009 if the project is to be launched by May 2010.

Over at the Old Port, Rafi says, "Montreal is a very large island and we manage a small part. There are dozens of other places they can take off from."

Born from a simple idea, one of those ideas that remains somehow at subliminal level for years in the mind just as a fantasy, the idea of CityGondola has been recently deeply investigated and reviewed. Precise 3D CAD drawings and computer simulations have indicated that the idea of a light, flexible, unmanned and safe aerial monorail, specifically dedicated to city centers and other metropolitan congested areas, is absolutely feasible and worthy to be taken in serious consideration.

At present time CityGondola is a project looking for support and partnerships as well for constructive criticism and suggestions.

The City Gondola’s concept, as well the design of the its rail, its trolley and its automatic drive control systems, were first developed by Sergio Blancato, Dr. in Electronics and founder of the CityGondolaProject.

ATLANTIC CITY — They would seem more at home in the Alps or at amusement parks.

But a company wants to ring Atlantic City with a $350 million sky ride system that would link casinos with major attractions and the train station.

Doppelmayr CTEC says the "Atlantic City Chariots of the Sky" gondola system could get millions of vehicles off the streets made famous by the Monopoly game and reduce air pollution.

The company says it ideally could be built without taxpayer expense.

The company says tickets, which could cost about $8 for all-day traveling, would help repay the investment costs.

City Planning Director William Crane says the project would be difficult to build because it would require environmental permits.
Governors Island Gondola

Governorsisland New York City and State officials are considering building an aerial gondola system that would connect Governors Island to both lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, according to the New York Post. The gondola cars would be smaller than the ones which go from Manhattan to Roosevelt island. New ferry service is also slated for the island, before the city puts its Fantasy Island schemes out to bid with developers.

The round structure in the bottom right corner of the photo here is a ventilation shaft for the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel that runs underneath the island. Too bad Robert Moses didn't plan an off-ramp at the island.

Built for the 1984 World's Fair, the Mississippi Aerial River Transit (MART) carried visitors and locals to and from the East and West Bank. After the Fair ended, MART continued for a short time, and then discontinued. The MART lives in history through the 1985 movie French Quarter Undercover.
Portland Aerial Tram
Portland, Oregon
The City of Portland has empowered Portland Aerial Transportation, Inc. (PATI) to lead the Marquam Hill tram project, including an internation design competition. PATI is operated by a board of local business and community leaders who are interested in helping the City of Portland design, develop and realize its next innovative transportation solution.
